All is not well in many corporate research labs today.
Businesses’ inability
to handle high-risk Technology Development (TD) and Platform projects
effectively contributes to a reluctance to undertake more of them.
In short, because these projects are mismanaged, the results are
often negative, which creates a real fear of undertaking these
higher risk, but vital, projects.
The fact is that traditional systems just do not work for TD projects.
Why? Traditional new product processes are designed for fairly
well-defined and predicable projects. But Technology Developments
are by their nature high risk projects with many unknowns. Many
of the activities required of most companies’ new product
process simply do not fit with TD projects.
